The Bookmobile On The Move
Final Ride of the Bookmobile
Final Ride of Bookmobile 2006 before being replaced by a new bookmobile in the later months of 2026. This is expected to be the final appearance of the old bookmobile first in the Chatham, July 4th parade and then on display at the 250th Celebration at the Old Dominion Agricultural Complex. A fitting farewell for a vehicle that has brought joy, learning and opportunity for the last 20 years.
For more than 85 years, the Pittsylvania County Public Library has proudly delivered books, knowledge, and connection directly to the community through its bookmobile service. Since 1940, this rolling library has ensured that residents—no matter where they live—have access to reading materials and library programs year-round, serving not only Pittsylvania County but also adjoining cities and counties.
The current bookmobile, purchased in February 2006 and dedicated later that October, has faithfully served the community for nearly two decades. However, the wear and tear of time have taken their toll. Originally replacing a vehicle that had been in operation since 1986, the current bookmobile is now experiencing frequent mechanical breakdowns and extended repair periods. These disruptions have had a noticeable impact, particularly during the summer months when the bookmobile plays a critical role in supporting summer reading programs and providing children with access to books while school is out of session.
Despite these challenges, the bookmobile continues to serve a wide range of community members, including residents in nursing homes, children in daycare and elementary schools, home bound individuals, and families at regular stops throughout the county’s expansive rural areas. In many cases, the bookmobile is more than a convenience—it is a lifeline to education, enrichment, and connection.
